WHAT HOLY WEEK IS ALL ABOUT, IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH

Definition: Holy Week is the week preceding Easter and the final week of Lent. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Holy Week includes Holy Thursday (also known as Maundy Thursday) and Good Friday, which, together with Holy Saturday, are known as the Triduum. Before the revision of the liturgical calendar in 1969, Holy Week was the second week of Passiontide; in the current calendar, Passiontide is synonymous with Holy Week.
During Holy Week, Christians commemorate the Passion of Christ, Who died on Good Friday in reparation for the sins of mankind, and rose on Easter Sunday to give new life to all who believe. Thus, while Holy Week is solemn and sorrowful, it also anticipates the joy of Easter through the recognition of God's goodness in sending His Son to die for our salvation.

Holy Week is also the week before Easter, a period which includes the religious holidays of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Holy week does not include Easter Sunday.
When did Holy Week get started?
The first recording of a Holy Week observance was made by Egeria, a Gallic woman who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land about 381-384. In an account of her travels she wrote for a group of women back in Spain, Egeria describes the Palm Sunday she observed in Jerusalem:
. . . all the children who are [gathered at the top of the Mount of Olives], including those who are not yet able to walk because they are too young and therefore are carried on their parents’ shoulders, all of them bear branches, some carrying palms, others, olive branches. And the bishop is led in the same manner as the Lord once was led.
What is Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in all four canonical Gospels. In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday includes a procession of the assembled worshipers carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. Because of the difficulty in some parts of the world of procuring palms for Palm Sunday, leaves from yew, willow, olive, or other native trees are frequently used. The Sunday was often designated by the names of these trees, as Yew Sunday, or by the general term Branch Sunday.
What is Spy Wednesday?
An archaic and infrequently used name for the Wednesday before Easter is “Spy Wednesday”, named for Judas’ becoming a spy for the Sanhedrin.
What is Maundy Thursday?

Maundy Thursday is the day before Good Friday. The term “Maundy” is derived from the Latin word mandatum (commandment). The term refers to the commandment given by Jesus at the Last Supper: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34)
What is Good Friday?
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The historical origins of the “Good” in Good Friday remain unclear, though some entomologists believe the term “good” is an archaic form of “holy.” The holiday is also known as known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, and Black Friday.
What is Holy Saturday?
In Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, Holy Saturday commemorates the “harrowing of hell,” the time between his Crucifixion and his Resurrection when Christ is believed to have descended into hell. Some Protestants, however, don’t believe that Scripture warrants believing the claim, found in the Apostle’s creed, that “[Christ] descended into hell.” As evangelical pastor-theologian John Piper says, “there is no textual basis for believing that Christ descended into hell.”
What is the Paschal Triduum?
Paschal Triduum is the period of three days that begins with the liturgy on the evening of Maundy Thursday (the vigil of Good Friday) and ends with evening prayer on Easter Sunday, the three-day period therefore from the evening of Maundy Thursday (excluding most of Thursday) to the evening of Resurrection Sunday. It recalls the passion, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, as portrayed in the canonical Gospels. Other terms for the holiday period are Easter Triduum, Holy Triduum, Paschal Triduum, or The Three Days.
What does the term Easter mean?
The Christian scholar Bede (673-735 AD, aka, the Venerable Bede) claimed in his bookDe Ratione Temporum that Easter was named after Eostre, a pagan goddess of the Saxon people in Northern Europe. Later scholars, however, claim that the term derives from the Anglo-Saxon word “oster”, meaning “to rise” or for their term for the Spring equinox, “Eostre.”

THE COMMEMORATION OF CHRIST INTO JERUSALEM, PALM SUNDAY.

Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entrance of Christ into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-9), when palm branches were placed in His path, before His arrest on Holy Thursday and His Crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent, and the week in which Christians celebrate the mystery of their salvation through Christ's Death and His Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

The History of Palm Sunday

Beginning in the fourth century in Jerusalem, Palm Sunday was marked by a procession of the faithful carrying palm branches, representing the Jews who celebrated Christ's entrance into Jerusalem.

In the early centuries, the procession began on the Mount of the Ascension and proceeded to the Church of the Holy Cross.
As the practice spread throughout the Christian world by the ninth century, the procession would begin in each church with the blessing of palms, proceed outside the church, and then return to the church for the reading of the Passion according to the Gospel of Matthew. The faithful would continue to hold the palms during the reading of the Passion. In this way, they would recall that many of the same people who greeted Christ with shouts of joy on Palm Sunday would call for His Death on Good Friday-a powerful reminder of our own weakness and the sinfulness that causes us to reject Christ.

Palm Sunday Without Palms?

In different parts of the Christian world, particularly where palms were historically hard to obtain, branches of other bushes and trees were used, including olive, box elder, spruce, and various willows. Perhaps best known is the Slavic custom of using pussy willows, which are among the earliest of plants to bud out in the spring.
The faithful have traditionally decorated their houses with the palms from Palm Sunday, and, in many countries, a custom developed of weaving the palms into crosses that were placed on home altars or other places of prayer. Since the palms have been blessed, they should not simply be discarded; rather, the faithful return them to their local parish in the weeks before Lent, to be burned and used as the ashes for Ash Wednesday.

DR DAVID OYEDEPO ADVISED TO HIS STUDENT

The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Dr David Oyedepo, has advised doctoral students in the institution to evolve ideas that could address societal problems. This is contained in a statement signed by the Head, Media and Information unit of the institution, Mr Emmanuel Igban, and made available to tnewsmen on Thursday in Lagos. According to the statement, Oyedepo gave the advice during a meeting with doctoral students of the university in Ota. He promised to make funds available to them for research “to identify problems to which they will proffer solutions.’’ Attributing current challenges to lack of capacity to get jobs done, Oyedepo lamented a situation whereby doctoral degree holders, who should be finding solutions to problems, seemed to lack capacity to think. “I have come to provoke your potentials as there is more inside you than the earned certificate. “If you cannot think out solutions to problems, your PhD is a complete waste,’’ he was quoted as saying. He noted that when people were conferred with such degree as Doctor of Philosophy, they were literally saying that such persons were ‘master thinkers’. “Such persons are those committed to finding solutions to life’s problems. “Until learning translates to thinking, our PhD is zero. There is no make-up PhD at Covenant University. “The first PhD student of the institution, who won a Microsoft award, is one out of six in the entire world. “All that we have done by going through the rigour of PhD is to ignite our thinking capacity,’’ he said. “It is so important that we have what it takes to recreate our country and the world; what it takes is to make thinking our career. “Africa has unusual potential, with Nigeria having more PhDs than four European countries put together. “One, however, wonders why Nigeria is not getting similar result as the Europeans,’’ he added. The statement said that Oyedepo insisted that there was nothing extraordinary on its own rather, it was man’s extraordinary input that made things extraordinary. It noted that there was nothing mystical about excellence other than that it was a product of man’s tireless commitment to it. “To make global impact in any field is at the cost of high level discipline just like continuous training is the only way to sustain impact in the field of sport. “In the same vein, continuous training is a vital requirement both to generate impact and sustain relevance,’’ the statement quoted Oyedepo as adding
