Fun-seekers complain as group graze cattle at National Theatre

People gave the advice in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

Fun-seekers have urged the management of the National Theatre, Lagos, to check on the constant encroachment of herdsmen who graze cattle within the premises of the national monument.

They said that the sight of herdsmen moving their animals around to feed on the monument`s lawns was not fit for a tourist centre.

The fun seekers added that apart from polluting the theatre`s environment with their dung, the animals posed danger to visitors as they could run out of control and inflict severe injuries on them.

"Honestly, I do not know what the animals are doing here? I keep seeing all these cattle all the time.

"And I wonder if the theatre has become a pasture or it is actually a place where people can come to relax.

"Sometimes, the environment smells of dung and you are lucky if you do not step on the animals` wastes while moving around.

"This is not just good for the theatre; the management has to do something about it. They have to stop the animals from coming in here,’’ a fun seeker, Mr Tunde Ajibade said.

Another fun-seeker, Mrs Mojisola Adu, said the constant presence of cattle around the theatre could scare visitors away especially as the country was experiencing security challenges.

Adu explained that fun spots were usual targets for terrorists, adding that criminals could disguise as herdsmen to launch attacks on unsuspecting fun seekers.

"You know stories of killer herdsmen are everywhere nowadays and all these terrorists like to attack people where and when they are enjoying themselves.

"I am not saying those ones at the theatre are criminals. What I am saying is that we have to be proactive and stop anything that could make people vulnerable.

"Again, animals like cattle are not supposed be around a place like this. The management of the theatre should take the appropriate steps to stop the practice by the herdsmen,’’ she said.

Another visitor, Mr Emeka Duru, said the ease with which herdsmen moved in and out of the theatre premises with cattle spoke of the security laxity at the tourist centre.

He, therefore, said there was the need for the management to put in place stringent security measures to ensure that only fun-seekers and those who had legitimate business had access to it.

Duru pointed out that some fun seekers especially children might have phobia for cattle because of threats they could pose.

He added that people with such fear might stop coming to the theatre because of the animals.

Mrs Margaret Arinze, who runs a food joint around the theatre, appealed to the management to ensure the monument`s premises was always cleared of dung.

She said the animals` wastes were everywhere around the theatre and that the smell always disturbed operators of businesses around as well as visitors who had come to picnic.

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, has disclosed that a lot of Nigerian students who were studying abroad have been returning to Nigerian universities due to the high cost of tuition over at the foreign varsities.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, July 14, Okojie also added that the students are returning as a result of the improvement of quality of education in Nigeria.

He also added that university officials are now choosing to teach here as opposed to going abroad.

“Many Nigerian students are coming back home, not only because of issue of high school fees but because there is improvement in programmes in Nigerian universities. Okojie reacted to the accusation that the NUC is rejecting law graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). He said this was due to the wrong assumption that NOUN programmes were part-time, adding that the commission is working towards resolving the issue.

Okojie who will retire from the NUC next month, advised his successor to build on the existing structures to further transform the Nigerian university system.

Britain sets nuclear vote as organisation underlines need for deterrent

Britain's outgoing prime minister David Cameron set a July 18 vote for parliament to decide on renewing Britain's nuclear deterrent, in a surprise move seemingly timed to underscore London's commitment to European security at a NATO summit.

Political divisions about whether to replace the Trident submarines, backed in principle by parliament in 2007, have raised questions about Britain's standing as a world power, amplified by Britain's vote to leave the European Union.

Speaking at a NATO summit, Cameron said it was time to put "beyond doubt" the decision on the renewal of the ageing fleet of four submarines carrying nuclear weapons.

"Today I can announce that we'll hold a parliamentary vote on July 18 to confirm members of parliaments' support for the renewal of a full fleet of four nuclear submarines capable of providing around-the-clock cover," Cameron told a news conference at the summit.

Cameron, who will hand over to a new prime minister in September, also defended his decision not to leave a new British leader to call the vote, which is expected to pass because of strong support from the governing Conservative party.

The centre-left Labour Party had been a supporter of renewal but its new leader, far-left veteran lawmaker Jeremy Corbyn, an anti-war campaigner, is opposed to the plans. The Scottish Nationalist Party wants Britain's Scotland-based Trident submarines scrapped.

"The nuclear deterrent remains essential in my view, not just to Britain's security, but as our allies have acknowledged here today, to the overall security of the NATO alliance," said Cameron, who resigned after last month's EU referendum.

Cameron made the announcement as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation underlined the importance of its nuclear deterrent in the summit's final statement, toughening the language of a communique two years ago, in an indirect warning to Russia.

NATO allies have been critical of what they say is reckless talk by Moscow about its nuclear prowess. Alliance Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is concerned Russia could be lowering the bar for using nuclear weapons.

"NATO has the capabilities and resolve to impose costs on an adversary that would be unacceptable and far outweigh the benefits that an adversary could hope to achieve," the statement said.

"The independent strategic nuclear forces of the United Kingdom and France have a deterrent role of their own and contribute to the overall security of the alliance."

Britain's Conservative government says the nuclear deterrent is vital to keep Britain safe in an increasingly hostile world, but some opposition figures say it is indefensible to spend billions on renewing the programme at a time of austerity cuts.

The government has indicated the price tag for replacing the fleet has risen since 2007 but has not given a full cost over its expected 30-year life. Calculations by Reuters and a Conservative lawmaker suggest it could reach 167 billion pounds.

Although the male study participants who engaged in both kinds of exercise reduced significant fat gain as they aged, as weight training tops aerobic exercise in being able to keep off excess fat.

The researchers checked fat gain by measuring the men's waist circumferences, which shows a more accurate picture of health than body weight does. "As you age, you lose muscle mass whether you like it or not," according to study coauthor Rania Mekary.

"With the loss of lean muscle, you therefore gain more fat mass, which we know weighs less than lean muscle." Receiving oxygen is vital for the body to be able to burn fat, she explains. As you increase oxygen uptake, the muscles develop more mitochondria, the energy increases in muscle cells. "When you have more mitochondria, your body is able to burn more fat as a source of energy."

However, it doesn’t end when you drop the barbells. "Other studies have found that even between sets, during these very short breaks, your muscles are pumped up and you continue to burn calories," according to Mekary. "Even 48 hours after you've weight trained, you're still burning more calories than a person who did not lift weights."

The study also revealed that spending additional time lifting can be even more beneficial, although it focused on only 20 minutes per day training. "We found a dose-response relationship between weight training and waist circumference," according to Mekary. "Basically, the more you do, the better. But at 20 minutes per day, you will see results."

However, it’s not easy transforming your muscles into fat-burning machines, Mekary says. If you're just starting to strength train, you can't expect miracles overnight. "It might take a few months or longer before you really see a difference," she notes.

And people only go for songs they have actually seen a video for. “People love the album, but for them to properly sit on the album, we need to give them videos.”

“When you put an album out in Nigeria, and want people to play it back to back. They want to play it, but only when they see visuals to it. That’s what we are trying to push basically.”

The fortunes of both artistes are not tied by music. Rather it is business that binds them together and creates a juxtaposition which further throws more light on the plight of Iyanya. Attention span is fickle, and as Iyanya has lost ours, Tekno has found it, and he is keeping it for now.

CDHR urges Ambode to enforce law with human face

The NGO warned that it would not hesitate to institute legal action against the government to correct the situation if the state failed to act on its position.

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), has urged Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode and Lagos State House of Assembly to `show human face’ in the enforcement of the law banning street hawking in the state.

The group made the call in a statement signed by CDHR Lagos Branch Chairman and Secretary, Mr Alex Omotehinse and Olumuyiwa Kushimo respectively and issued to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

It said that the government needed to do more on social welfare responsibility and unemployment before enforcing such a law.

The statement read:  "It must be very clear to all that the CDHR, Lagos state branch, do not entirely oppose the government policies especially the street trading and illegal market law.

"But, in a society where government itself is lacking in its social welfare responsibilities, the law is nothing but anti-masses law without human face.

"We urge the governor and the House of Assembly to be pro-masses and reflect on the economic pains and challenges of the people who have been very patient and tolerant.

"The state government and the legislative body should consider and appreciate the good people of Lagos State who went all out defying the security and the risk they went through in the last transition.

"We urge the governor and the Speaker of Lagos Assembly to use their good offices to reconsider our position.

"The House of Assembly should show its true concern and love for the masses they represent by putting the law on hold."

CDHR noted that majority of street hawkers were youths who designed for themselves alternative means of survival as a result of government's failure in its social responsibilities.

It said that socio-economic challenges, unemployment, poor access to education, bad road network, poor traffic management and lack of affordable lock up shops across council areas were responsible for street hawking.

It warned that it would embark on mass protest to Government House and the Assembly Complex if nothing was done to reverse the law and its enforcement.

The NGO warned that it would not hesitate to institute legal action against the government to correct the situation if the state failed to act on its position.

NAN recalled that the government commenced enforcement of the law banning street hawking on July 1 following the death of a hawker who was crushed by a vehicle at Maryland on June 29.

The CDHR is a human rights and non-governmental organisation whose ideals are committed to equity, justice, democratic values and good governance.

A Nigerian activist, Olufunke Phillips has cried out for help after reckless and drunk Nigerian policemen posted to Stanbic IBTC bank in Aguda, shot in the air with the cartridge case falling inside her car leaving her in a state of panic as she was driving past the bank.

However, the alerted lady was shocked to find out that the policemen were celebrating and that they had wasted bullets just to welcome a colleague.

Brief description: The West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD) in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank are inviting young agricultural entrepreneurs to submit applications for the Empowering Youths for Agripreneurship in West Africa Project.

Student body rejects N2,500 Post-UTME screening fee

NANS, which has been, and will always be, at the forefront of any and every kind of exploitation of Nigerian students in any guise was relieved by the recent ban on post-UTME

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected kicked the introduction of the admission screening fee of N2,500 by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Education.

Mr Gbenga Ayenuro, the NANS Vice President, said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure on Friday.

"NANS, which has been, and will always be, at the forefront of any and every kind of exploitation of Nigerian students in any guise was relieved by the recent ban on post-UTME.

"As it was a long overdue decision to end the exploitation of prospectively- Nigerian students seeking admission. And it was a policy that endeared the Federal Government to the hearts of Nigerian masses; it was widely jubilated and welcomed by all concerned stakeholders in the Nigerian education sector," he said.

According to him, it is surprising, appalling, anti-masses and unethical, for the federal government to submit to pressure from the heads of tertiary institutions by introducing the post-UTME screening fee.

He noted that the policy somersault was tantamount to the government being insensitive to the growing economic meltdown being experienced by parents and guardians of prospective students all over the country.

Ayenuro said that NANS viewed the introduction of the post-UTME screening fee as another way of extorting and exploiting potential students. He alleged that it was another avenue of enriching management of various tertiary institutions across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

"Nigerian students can no longer keep mute in the face of the general hardship confronting the Nigerian masses.

"Our parents and guardians have become incapable of sending us stipends for our upkeep let alone of paying for our tuition fees.

"The food and provision stores in all our various campuses are undergoing abysmally low patronage from students due to the ever increasing high price tag of virtually all commodities.

"We cannot continue to keep mute while our future is being mortgaged and short changed by this present administration,’’ he alleged.

Ayenuro therefore issued a three-working day ultimatum to the ministry to reverse its decision on imposition of post-UTME screening fee as the most important stakeholder in the Nigerian education sector.

He said that failure to reverse the new policy would result in a peaceful protest at the Ministry of Education, Abuja, at a date to be announced.

LSEPA shuts down 70 churches, 20 mosques

70 churches, and 20 mosques in Lagos state have been shut down.

Bola Shabi, the general manager of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LSEPA), these places of worship were shut over noise pollution.

Speaking to Vanguard, he said the closure affects mostly make-shift churches and mosques, adding that this was part of the government's attempt to have a noise-free state, by 2020.

"We've been so strict now that we are not going to even allow make-shift churches in the state any longer.

What I mean by make-shift, using tents and uncompleted building, we are not going to allow that any further in the state.

Enforcement is a continuous exercise and we have set a target for ourselves. We want to ensure that Lagos is noise-free by the year 2020. With our status as a mega city, by year 2020 we will be free of noise,'' he said.
